What is Carpentry Connect?

Carpentries community members around the globe have expressed great interest in coming together more frequently to exchange ideas and knowledge, collaborate and network. Thus, Carpentry Connect events were born! These events are friendly, fun, and safe space for exploring what is happening in the Carpentries in your region. What you can expect at Carpentry Connect NZ 2021

Trainers, helpers, and maintainers from across NZ engage with the Carpentries community in different ways and there is seldom a chance to learn from each other’s successes and challenges - which is why we host a day dedicated to networking and connection-building. At Carpentry Connect NZ 2021 you can expect:

  • An energizing update from the global Carpentries team (guest speaker TBD);
  • Networking, games and icebreakers geared towards deepening community connections;
  • open discussions on topics of interest (e.g. how to maintain learner moment after a running a Carpentries workshop);
  • and more - check out the preliminary schedule below

But what is The Carpentries?

The Carpentries is a community-centric organisation committed to teaching foundational coding, and data science skills to researchers worldwide. In New Zealand, the Carpentries community is growing as more institutions and universities run Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry, and Library Carpentry workshops and have staff attend instructor training. Most importantly, all members of the Carpentries community including workshop hosts, instructors, and learners follow this code of conduct because creating a safe space for learners is key to growing a healthy, supportive community.

Who is this event for?

This event is specifically for people who have encountered the Carpentries in some way (perhaps as a learner, helper, instructor, or ally) and want to strengthen their ties to the community.

At the end of this get-together, we hope you have new connections, renewed inspiration for running Carpentries workshops in 2021, and feel supported as a valued member of the Carpentries community.

A hybrid event:

You can attend the full -day event in person in Wellington or attend a shorter (but still awesome!) online-friendly version from 2:00pm - 4:45pm NZDT. The details of the online portion including the zoom link will be sent to registrants that select the "online" ticket option once the logistics have been worked out. Thank you heaps for being patient as we design an event that benefits as many community members as possible!
