High Performance Computing (HPC) Operations Manager - NIWA

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science. NIWA's High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) is a key component of NeSI infrastructure and is used to support both NIWA and NeSI research activities.

NIWA is seeking an Operations Manager to manage the HPC infrastructure (in Wellington and Auckland) and associated services, and the team responsible for delivering these HPC services. As well as these operational management responsibilities, this position contributes to the development of the current HPC systems, informing and implementing the policies under which they operate, supporting future developments and procurement, and developing and delivering the services that underpin NIWA research, forecasting operations, and commercial services.

Applicants should have a relevant tertiary qualification, advanced knowledge of IT management systems and technologies (preferably in HPC) and a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of operating large-scale IT infrastructure (ideally in cluster HPCs and supercomputers).

They should have a considerable experience in a similar organisation or specialised facility of at least comparable size and scale as NIWA's HPC systems. They should have at least 10 years of complex IT computing experience, and at least 5 years in managing IT systems and teams. Experience with Cray systems and IBM's Spectrum Scale file system is preferred. They should be practiced in partnership development, risk management, and business delivery in ICT Service Management.

Demonstrated organizational skills, competence in technical management, along with people management and professional leadership capabilities are essential. Applicants will need to be commercially aware, have a commitment to customer service and be adept at planning. Strategic thinking, good communications skills, and competence in relationship building are also required.
