High Performance Computing training

On 1 July 2025, the roles, services and technologies of New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) were integrated into the crown-owned company, Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ). Stay connected with us by visiting the REANNZ website.

High Performance Computing (HPC) is part of standard suite of tools for researchers across domains.

For more than 15 years, NeSI offered HPC training to help researchers in New Zealand use its HPC infrastructure and advance their HPC skills. In 2025, NeSI integrated with the Research and Advanced Education Network New Zealand (REANNZ).

As part of that integration, REANNZ will continue to build on the programme of HPC-focused training NeSI cultivated over its tenure. Visit the REANNZ website for more details or get in touch by emailing training@reannz.co.nz.

Previous training offered

NeSI's "Introduction to HPC using NeSI" was a fully hands-on course that allowed researchers to get onboard and try out the power of HPC through guided instruction. The course was typically run as a half-day event.

This course taught researchers how to access NeSI infrastructure, as well as how to sumbit and manage their jobs on the cluster. Participants also learned how to transfer their data onto the cluster, download the results, access software on the cluster, and apply it to their own research.

NeSI also provided intermediate and advanced HPC courses addressing specific needs of research communities. Some of the most popular courses were "Introduction to MPI (Message Passing Interface)" and "Introduction to OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing)".
