Research Computing and Data Platforms Manager - NIWA

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.

NeSI is a collaboration of four institutions, including NIWA, working in partnership with the Crown, providing High Performance Computing (HPC), analytics, data and consultancy services to the NZ science sector, government initiatives/agencies and industry. NIWA's High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF), a key component of NeSI infrastructure, is used to support both NIWA and NeSI research activities.

We are seeking a Research Computing and Data Platforms Manager to join the NIWA and NeSI teams.

Responsibilities

The Research Computing and Data Platforms team is responsible for ensuring that NIWA and NeSI's research computing infrastructure, platforms, and associated services are operating reliably, efficiently, and are effective at meeting the needs of end-users and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities of the team include:

  • Implementing, maintaining, and managing automation in research computing and data platform infrastructure
  • Designing, specifying, and planning the technical implementation of new research computing and data services as well as enhancements to existing services
  • Ensuring all software and operating systems are up-to-date and proactively managed
  • Ensuring that hardware systems and incidents are being well-managed, actively monitored, and equipment repaired or replaced should issues arise

The Research Computing and Data Platforms Manager has operational management responsibilities for the team and HPCF, and contributes to the development of the current research computing and data systems, informing and implementing the policies under which they operate, supporting future developments and procurement, and developing and delivering the services that underpin NIWA research, forecasting operations, and commercial services.

Experience

Applicants should have a relevant tertiary qualification, advanced knowledge of IT management systems and technologies (preferably in Cloud-Native and HPC) and a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of operating large scale IT infrastructure (ideally in cluster HPCs and supercomputers). They should have a considerable experience in a similar organisation or specialised facility of at least comparable size and scale as NIWA's HPC systems. They should have at least 10 years of complex IT computing experience, and at least 5 years in managing IT systems and teams. They should be practiced in partnership development, risk management and business delivery in ICT Service Management.

Demonstrated organizational skills, competence in technical management along with people management and professional leadership capabilities are essential. Applicants will need to be commercially aware, have a commitment to customer service and be adept at planning. Strategic thinking, good communications skills and competence in relationship building are also required.
