HPC Senior Science Advisor and Platforms Architect - NIWA

NIWA (https://www.niwa.co.nz/) is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

NeSI is a collaboration of four institutions, including NIWA, working in partnership with the Crown, providing High Performance Computing (HPC), analytics, data and consultancy services to the NZ science sector, government initiatives/agencies and industry. NeSI's primary aim is to grow the computing and analytics capability of researchers to ensure New Zealand's future prosperity. NIWA's High Performance Computing facility (HPCF), a key component of NeSI infrastructure, is used to support both NIWA and NeSI research activities.

We are seeking an HPC Senior Science Advisor and Platform Architect. The position works nationally with scientific communities gathering their High Performance Computing & Data Science (HPC&DS) needs and extracting patterns, issues, and requirements that help drive positive change to NIWA and NeSI's shared infrastructure and services platform. The position provides strategic advice and expertise through evaluating future technologies for potential application in scientific computing and leading performance measurement and optimisation of the shared platform for specific communities and workflows.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant science domain, combined with a considerable scientific research sector experience in a similar organisation or specialised facility of at least comparable size and scale as NIWA's HPC systems. They should have at least 10 years of HPC computing experience, experience of leadership in advanced scientific environments and, preferably, in design, selection and procurement of HPC systems. They should also be practiced in risk management and business delivery in ICT Service Management.

Demonstrated people management and professional leadership capabilities are essential, and applicants will need to be commercially aware, have a commitment to customer service and be adept at planning. Strategic thinking, well-honed communications skills and competence in relationship building are also required.
