HPC and Cloud Systems Engineer - NIWA/NeSI

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) has an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the New Zealand (NZ) research landscape by working within the National eScience Infrastructure (NeSI). As a part of NeSI-embedded role at NIWA, you will not only have the opportunity to work closely with local NIWA colleagues, but will form part of a high-performance nationally-distributed and multi-disciplinary team empowered to accelerate research outcomes for NeSI users across NZ.

You will lead the support and development of infrastructure and platform services based on NeSI's new OpenStack capabilities. You will help to ensure the delivery of a flexible and robust computational environment for scientific research whilst maintaining a stable platform for delivery of NeSI's business systems.

The ideal skills and experience will include:

  • At least five years' experience in the design, specification, implementation, and operation of services based on Linux and/or Unix, preferably with some having been mission-critical services.
  • Proficiency with management and deployment of OpenStack based infrastructure and services.
  • Prior experience with HPC platforms, HPC interconnects/fabrics, IBM Spectrum Storage / GPFS, IBM Spectrum Protect, Slurm, Bright Cluster Manager and database administration would be advantageous, as would experience with data management and system integration services.
  • Familiarity with Python.
  • Working knowledge of the build, management, and runtime of HPC software and related operating system libraries and services.
