Applications Support Specialist

NeSI is a collaboration of five institutions, including the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), working in partnership with the Crown, to provide High Performance Computing (HPC), analytics, and consultancy services to the NZ Research sector, and industry. NeSI's primary aim is to grow the computing and analytics capability of researchers to ensure New Zealand's future prosperity.

NIWA is New Zealand's leading provider of natural resources and environmental research and applied science services, specialising in atmospheric, climate, freshwater and marine research.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HPC Applications Support Specialist to make a significant contribution to the New Zealand research landscape by working within NeSI.

A key component of NIWA's research infrastructure is the High Performance Computing Facility, which is used to support research activities in climate, chemistry climate, weather, river flood, sea state, ocean, sea-level, and inundation modelling and forecasting, as well as an operational environmental forecasting system (EcoConnect). Within the National eScience Infrastructure the system also supports the High Performance Computing (HPC) requirements of researchers within the national research community.

The Application Support Specialist operates nationally, providing front-line support to researchers including installing, porting, testing and troubleshooting science codes, machine access, job submissions and workflows. This position is responsible for maintaining an awareness and understanding of scientific programming and HPC and will see you:

• Advise researchers on how to apply for and access NeSI infrastructure, including assisting with their workflow development and software needs.
• Assist in planning and running workshops and training courses.
• Providing a responsive experience working with scientists with a variety of different computational backgrounds, as well as being a trusted adviser

This is a specialised role requiring a background working with scientific applications and previous experience in supporting researchers. Your educational background will include a B.Sc. degree in a computationally intensive field of science; e.g. climate, environmental science, computational physics or chemistry, or preferably a M.Sc. in above disciplines.

You're already skilled at sharing your knowledge through both formal training events and your day to day engagement, and as you keep growing your professional knowledge about MPI/OpenMP and HPC practices, you'll gain the confidence of research groups around NZ.
